Stains are inevitable. A splash of chai at breakfast, a dot of biryani oil at lunch, or an ink mark from a leaky pen — life happens fast, and stains happen faster. The good news? How you handle a stain in the first few minutes determines whether it comes out completely or becomes permanent.
The Golden Rule: Act Fast, Stay Calm
- Blot, don't rub. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper into the fabric.
- Work from the outside in. This prevents the stain from spreading outward.
- Remove excess first. Scrape off any solid bits before applying any liquid.
- Tell your cleaner. Always inform your dry cleaner about what the stain is.
☕ Tea and Coffee Stains
Blot immediately, rinse with cold water from the back of the fabric, apply a small amount of liquid dish soap or white vinegar, let it sit for 5–10 minutes, then rinse with cold water. Do NOT use hot water — it sets the tannins. Send to cleaners if the stain is on silk, wool, or a structured garment.
🍛 Oil and Grease Stains
Blot the excess oil, sprinkle cornstarch, talcum powder, or baking soda generously, let sit for 15–30 minutes, brush off gently, apply a drop of dish soap, work in gently, then rinse with cold water. Send to cleaners if on delicate or dry-clean-only fabric.
💄 Lipstick and Makeup Stains
Apply a tiny amount of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or micellar water to break down the waxy base, dab with a clean cloth, then treat with dish soap and rinse.
🩸 Blood Stains
Use cold water only — hot water cooks the protein in blood and sets it permanently. Apply a paste of cold water and salt or hydrogen peroxide. For dried blood, soak in cold salt water for 1–2 hours.
🖊️ Ink and Pen Stains
Apply rubbing alcohol or hand sanitiser to the stain. Blot — don't rub — from the outside in. Rinse with cold water and repeat as needed.
🍷 Red Wine Stains
Blot immediately, pour cold sparkling water over the stain, apply a paste of salt and a splash of white wine. Rinse after 5–10 minutes. Dried wine stains need professional enzymes to break down.
💛 Sweat and Deodorant Stains
Mix equal parts white vinegar and water and soak the stained area for 30 minutes. For stubborn yellow stains, apply a paste of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap.
What You Should NEVER Do
- ❌ Don't rub aggressively — it damages fibres and spreads the stain
- ❌ Don't use hot water on protein stains (blood, egg, dairy)
- ❌ Don't use bleach on coloured or delicate fabrics
- ❌ Don't iron over a stain — heat will permanently bond it
- ❌ Don't over-wet delicate fabrics like wool and silk
